Childhood Obesity
It's more serious than you thought

The Parents Step Up campaign wants to make parents aware that they are in charge, and ultimately accountable, for their children's weight. Too often, danger signs of unhealthy weight are dismissed as a child being "big-boned," or having some "baby fat" in the hopes that he or she will "grow out of it."

Addressing childhood obesity is not about physical appearance, nor is it about social acceptance -- rather, it is about the future of your child. Obesity is a health- and life-risk that will affect a child until he or she dies, which may occur as much as 20 years early.

Some of these facts can seem scary, but it is necessary to be up-front and clear about both the immediate and long-term effects of childhood obesity in order to change the future of our children.

Childhood obesity is an epidemic.

  • Since 1974, the number of overweight or obese children has increased by 258%, to 15.5% of children in America.

  • 70% of obese children grow up to be obese adults.

  • 35% of overweight children have overweight parents.

  • The average child spends more time per year watching television than attending school.
